Mercy cardiac robotic team receives special designation
Two Mercy Medical Group surgeons are part of the first cardiac robotic team in the nation to complete the Mini-Fellowship program of the International College of Robotic Surgery (ICRS). They were joined in the training by several members of the robotic team at Mercy General Hospital, all part of the Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute.
The Mercy team devoted approximately 12 months to complete the mini-fellowship, which included on-site training in Atlanta, an online training course, live case observations and live case proctoring. The mini-fellowship is a product of ICRS, a non-profit organization dedicated to a "total team training approach" in advancing minimally invasive techniques using robotic instrumentation.
The ICRS team offers training in both intracardiac and revascularization surgery, using the daVinci robot in cardiac surgery. Mercy's graduating team includes Mercy Medical Group cardiac surgeons Allen Morris, MD, and Frank Slachman, MD; along with several members of the cardiac robotic surgery team at Mercy General Hospital.
