Mental illness affects one in four families. Symptoms of mental illness may begin in childhood or adolescence, as well as in adulthood. Psychiatrists, medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry, have expertise in assessing, diagnosing and treating mental illness and emotional disorders. They also may prescribe appropriate medications and other treatments to alleviate symptoms.
Mercy Medical Group's Behavioral Health Department is contracted with local psychiatric hospitals for inpatient care if necessary.
